Kansas City Weekend

I moved to Kansas City, Missouri in the midst of COVID in 2020 after graduating college. I’ve since had time to try and find some local spots around KC! I’ve come up with the perfect itinerary to get the most out your next weekend in the city known for BBQ, art, sports, and beauty.

Friday:

3:00 PM - Check into your hotel or Airbnb. Some well-rated options are:

4:00 PM - Take a stroll through the River Market neighborhood, home to a vibrant farmers market on Saturday and Sunday mornings, unique boutiques, and restaurants. Grab a coffee from Thou Mayest - River Quay or a scoop of homemade ice cream from Betty Rae’s for an afternoon pick me up.

The City Market Farmer’s Market runs every weekend 9am-3pm year round.

6:00 PM - If you’re in the mood for BBQ, head to Jack Stack Barbecue - Freight House for dinner. It's a Kansas City institution and their burnt ends are a must-try. However, if you’re craving tacos with the freshest ingredients, stay in River Market and check out KC Taco Company!

8:00 PM - Make your way to the Power & Light District for some nightlife. The outdoor district has plenty of bars and live music venues to choose from. Try out the KC Streetcar. It’s free to ride and spreads across the heart of downtown Kansas City. In 2025, the streetcar will be extended from the River Market down past the Country Club Plaza, just over 6 miles!

Saturday:

9:00 AM - Start your day with a hearty breakfast at The Homesteader Cafe, their kitchen is filled with food from local farmers. Their hot cakes are dreamy. Don’t forget to get their homemade cinnamon roll for the table! You’ll be sure to find something to fill your sweet or savory craving.

11:00 AM - Stroll through the City Market or head to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. It's one of the best art museums in the country and admission is free!

1:00 PM - Grab lunch at Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que. Their Z-Man sandwich is a must-try. If you’re craving something other than BBQ, I’d recommend Cupini’s. This laid-back Italian cafe will be sure to satisfy your hunger. You can’t go wrong trying any of their homemade stuffed tortellini.

3:00 PM - Take a stroll through the Country Club Plaza, an outdoor shopping district with Spanish-style architecture and plenty of fountains in the summer or dazzling lights during the holidays!

5:00 PM - Grab a tasty cocktail at Mean Mule Distilling Co. Their agave spirits are made locally here in KC! If you’d rather try out a local brewery, head to Casual Animal Brewing down the road to taste their craft beer!

7:00 PM - Dinner at Westport Cafe & Bar. They have a French-inspired menu and an extensive wine list. They’ve also got a reverse happy hour menu with great food options. We enjoyed their lamb kefta dish along with a juicy Westport Cafe Burger.

9:00 PM - Head back toward downtown to Green Lady Lounge and find yourself a seat in this iconic, low-lit, jazz club.

Afterwards, swing through the popular Town-Topic Hamburgers for a late night bite!

Sunday:

9:00 AM - Grab a pastry and coffee from Messenger Coffee Co off of Grand Boulevard. Be sure to head upstairs to their rooftop fireplace to enjoy your morning!

11:00 AM - Visit the WWI Museum and Memorial. It's a fascinating museum and the view is not to be missed. After, head to Union Station to see what events they’re hosting!

The WWI Museum is open daily 10am-5pm

1:00 PM - Grab lunch at Char Bar. The food is great but the ambience here is even better. I always recommend their charred bits & grits as an appetizer. It’s truly amazing!

3:00 PM - Take a walk through Loose Park, one of the city's largest parks.

5:00 PM - Enjoy the afternoon at Boulevard Brewing Company. Check out this Midwest brewery - sip on their canned cocktails, book a tour, and experience the 21+ Rec Deck upstairs.

The Rec Deck is open on Saturdays 1:30pm-9pm. Grab your friends and rent a shuffle board court!

7:00 PM - Dinner at Garozzo’s Ristorante. They’ve been serving outstanding dishes in the Kansas City area since 1989. I promise you won’t be disappointed here. Be sure to make reservations! Once you’re there, try the mozzarella fritti appetizer and finish with their limoncello cake!

Finish an evening by revisiting the WWI Memorial to see the city lit up at night!

I hope this itinerary helps you get outta town to plan a fun & memorable weekend in Kansas City!
